Thomas asked:

for a reasonably (to very) nice kitchen renovation (new appliances, counter tops, cabinets, etc), how much is it going to cost? And what percentage should be spent on what?
EDIT: No, I’m not doing this by myself. I’m not exactly someone you’d call handy. I just don’t want to be ripped off by the design consultant and his contractor.

roof repair
There are all kinds of roofs. If your own happens to be quite flat, and your house is a one-story building, so that you can reach the roof by using an ordinary ladder, there is little danger in venturing out on it, but if you have to crawl through a window and claw your way around on a steep roof, you will do much better to stay away from it. However, there are a few basic rules for safe roof work which every homeowner should be familiar with.

Many people do not realize they have a problem with their roof until the inevitable happens…..roof leakage. More often than not, that is when a roofer receives a call to perform a roof repair – only to find that the whole roof needs replaced. Some are frustrated when they are being apprised of this situation and believe the roofer may be trying to “sell” them something they may not need. Be aware that roof repairs cost more on a hourly basis then replacing a roof. It would take “only” approximately two days of doing roofing repairs to equal the same amount paid in labor for an entire week when replacing your roof.

If a leak is recognized, clear the area of any home belongings, for instance electronic equipment furniture, etc. Place a bucket to collect the water for the time being. Once you can clearly see where the water is dripping from the ceiling, take a ladder and look at the roof in that area. You might easily see a part of the roof that has a broken shingle; you might also see debris, loose flashings, etc.

The Roofing Process

A moderately sized roofing job might take only 3 or 4 days.

Remove all existing shingles, deposit them in a roll-off, and remove. Begin to make minor repairs on roof if in good condition. If not, replace bad wood with plywood or 1″x6″ boards, whichever is applicable to your roof. Install the “ice dam,” which is an ice and water barrier made of plastic to prevent backed up ice in the gutters from working itself under the shingles. Lay down asphalt paper. Apply the shingles – starting at the eaves and working upward. Apply flashing around all areas where leaks might come into the house – against the chimney, stack vents, etc. Install the ridge vent.

We need to cover a few things before starting any roofing project. These include:

· Get Proper Information: Be aware this is a construction project and there will be noise and debris. Children love to watch what’s going on with their house but they must be kept away from the perimeter of the worksite, ladders and equipment.

· Share Properly Your roofing Condition with Roofers: Roofers generally do their best not to drop debris into shrubbery or flower beds but it is sometimes unavoidable. Inform roofing company if you have delicate flower beds or shrubbery that needs special protection.

· Point out sprinklers: that heads along driveways and sidewalks to help us prevent damaging them.

Rose Garden

The texture and the fullness of the rose is unlike any other flower, and they come in a wide variety of scents and colors that range from a very bright yellow to a dark deep red. It is curious that such a beautiful flower is also equipped with such a thorny stem. A little of the good and the bad from nature I suppose. Roses originally came from the northern hemisphere, and there are over a hundred species growing in mostly temperate regions. Although the rose as been the flower of choice to express ones love for many years now, it was used originally for medicinal purposes in medieval times.

Rose gardens are not only one of the most beautiful types of flower gardens to have, they are without a doubt the most difficult to grow and maintain. A well designed rose garden will always change with time, and some of the landscape design software available will allow you to view your rose garden as it matures. The leading search engine for finding rose garden related info is Google. Finding rose garden material on the net isn’t arduous; it just takes a little bit of diligence. While one might believe that the greatest means to use for researching thorough info on this topic is the internet, it is vital not to leave out other sources. Keep in mind; you’re not going to find every tidbit of rose garden information educational. To stay current with the newest info, you should think about signing up for an RSS feed on the topic of rose gardens

One of the most famous rose gardens is the White House Rose Garden, and is located in the west wing of the White House. Many Presidential ceremonies and news conferences have taken place here, as well as the wedding of Richard Nixon’s daughter Tricia, to Edward Cox in 1971. First Lady Ellen Louise Wilson the wife of President Woodrow Wilson established the garden in 1913 when she redesigned what was previously known as the colonial gardens.

Garden design advice please?

February 15th, 2010 — 06:23 am
garden design
BlueDal asked:

I was asked to design a small garden, mostly influenced by zen gardens. The site is shaped like a triangle, and there’s bamboo on one of the corners. However, the owners don’t want sand or gravel because they have dogs, and the site doesn’t seem to be apt for a zen garden (there’s a Mexican fountain and a cross), so I thought about using some big rocks, tall ferns (similar to lady ferns), santolina and salvia. Santolina mostly to resemble the color of gravel, and salvia because I like the scent and the purple flowers somewhat resemble Japanese cherry blossoms. Do you have any other recommendations? Thanks for the advice.

Staying Quiet asked:

I have recently purchased a very small home…as a single mom it was the best I could do. However, lately, a lot of my family and friends (the same ones that told me it was smart to buy this house) have said that I will have a hard time making a profit on the home when I resale. I have no plans to resale until at least 5 years…but what are some inexpensive and possible do it yourself improvements I could make that would result in increasing the value of the home. Thank you!

How do I repair a rubber roof?

February 8th, 2010 — 03:14 pm
roof repair
Marvinator asked:

We had a rubber roof installed on our patio. The guy who did it was unexperienced and needless to say, it has leaked since. I would like to find a way to repair this, if possible.

Can it be repaired? If so, how and with what?
If not, I’m considering replacing the rubber. (The angle of the roof calls for either metal or rubber. I don’t want metal because of the noise when it rains so we’re doing the rubber roof.)

In replacing the rubber, can I just lay another layer on top of the older rubber or do I have to take it up and replace the entire thing?

Nourishing Bites For My First Baby

February 8th, 2010 — 06:04 am

Babies certainly can not survive on milk alone. Even though it’s essential to feed your little one with milk for the first few months of life, you also need think about solid foodstuff once the baby shows certain indications of readiness. You can find out about the different signs of digestive system preparedness by reading My First Baby books or by surfing the Internet.

Cooking for your baby is pretty much like cooking for grown-ups. The only difference is that preparing baby food calls for extra attention and care in the preparation and handling of ingredients.

Pre-cooking Basics

As a rule, you need to wash your hands with soap and lukewarm water prior to preparing your baby’s meal. It is imperative that you dry them up using a clean towel before touching any of the ingredients. Similarly, you also have to thoroughly wash your cooking utensils beforehand.

Preparing The Ingredients

Fruits/Veggies – Wash, peel and cut up fruits and vegetables prior to cooking. In addition, remove the stones and seeds if you see any.

Fish – Before you cook just remove the bones, fat and other tough parts. Once the fish has been done, take it to pieces and do away with any left over traces of skin and bones.

Meat – remove all the fat away before cooking. Once the meat is done, slice it into tiny portions. Don’t forget to get rid of any bone and other tough bits.

Cooking Baby Food

Fruits/Veggies – Except for bananas and avocados, all types of fruits and veggies should be cooked before feeding them to your little one. You have the option to microwave, boil or steam them. Some types of fruit.g. pear or apple) can even be oven-cooked. Nonetheless, steam cooking remains to be the most excellent choice since it preserves a greater amount of nutrients.

In case you don’t own a steam-cooker, don’t be bothered about it. Microwave cooking and boiling are fine substitute so long as you keep the water to a bare minimum and make sure that you don’t overcook the food.

As for carrots, turnip, spinach and beet, you must boil them at all times rather than using the microwave or steam-cooker. These vegetables normally contain potentially detrimental nitrates that are largely removed in the course of boiling.

Meat and Fish – You may cook them any way you like. Just see to it that they are well done and that you take out all the fat and tough bits prior to serving. If you wish to roast or to fry meat or fish, aim to avoid putting in fat or at least keep it to a minimum. Also, you should keep in the mind the fact that its is not necessary to add any sugar, fat or salt to your baby’s food.

Serving Suggestions

Make use of a mashing fork-or a food blender, if you have one-to mix up the food to its appropriate texture. If your baby is still in the early stages of taking solids, then the food must be totally liquefied. As his/her tolerance to solid food increases, you can slowly transition to slightly thicker and chunkier servings. Needless to say, you need to give your little one some time to adjust at each stage of the progression.

In case you have cooking water in handy, you may put in some in order to smoothen or moisten it up the food. Keep in mind that your baby’s mouth is more receptive to heat than yours. Therefore, the baby food should be warm and not hot.  clothing

To sum it all up, the two most vital tips to remember when cooking for your little one are: (1) do no prepare foods that are not suitable for his or her age, and (2) see to it that he/she is able to tolerate the consistency of the food. Everything else is simply plain cooking. All you need to do now is to get hold of My First Baby Food recipes so that you can start practicing for your most precious one.
