We are a nation of animal lovers but are we crazy to consider taking on a pet during these turbulent financial times? According to the animal charity Blue Cross, people are actually returning their pets to animal shelters and such like because they cannot afford to keep them for the duration. According to the article “’Last chance saloon’ for our pooches?” if we want to get close to animals, taking on the responsibility of a pet is not the only way.
There are no end of shelters, parks and zoos that would welcome an extra set of hands looking after the animals. If you are desperate to get a pet, why not ‘pet-sit’ for a friend or give a relative a holiday from their pet? Once you have bypassed the funny looks and comments of “have you lost your senses?” they would be eager to hand over their furry friend for the foreseeable future!!
