How do I repair a rubber roof?

February 8th, 2010 — 03:14 pm
roof repair
Marvinator asked:

We had a rubber roof installed on our patio. The guy who did it was unexperienced and needless to say, it has leaked since. I would like to find a way to repair this, if possible.

Can it be repaired? If so, how and with what?
If not, I’m considering replacing the rubber. (The angle of the roof calls for either metal or rubber. I don’t want metal because of the noise when it rains so we’re doing the rubber roof.)

In replacing the rubber, can I just lay another layer on top of the older rubber or do I have to take it up and replace the entire thing?

Improving The Juicer Experience

September 3rd, 2009 — 12:47 am

Number one reason why you can not find a best juicer is because there are different vegetables and fruits that have different properties and qualities. This ultimately means that a juicing method which is effective for a particular type of fruit may not be the best choice for another. It’s considered that a person is more healthy if she regularly drinks fresh juicer products. But improving the juicing experience is a matter of knowing what works best for a particular produce and how a juicer can keep its good performance. Using steam juicer and a masticating juicer is not really useful on the same type of content.

Fruits especially have cell walls that are very soft and they need a special extraction procedure – a good juice extractor can help here. Taking care of the cantaloupes, pineapples, pears and apples by peeling them off and cutting them into little pieces, you can handle them easily and juice them without hassle. On the other hand, citrus fruits, like oranges, lemons, grapefruits, or tangerines, should be juiced along with their bitter outer surface –after grating away their outer rind. Nutritionists say that it is very important to keep the white skin area and use it, because that is where all the best and valuable nutrients are placed. For that reason, most people use the common method of slicing the fruit in half and then pressing it against a reamer style juicer or a citrus press in order to extract the healthiest parts of a citrus juice.

Vegetables, on the other hand, are tougher to handle. Because of their rigid and fibrous cell walls, these will need much better juice extractor that will be able to extract the fluids from them. Scientists recommend that due to their lower acid content, vegetables have to be consumed immediately after their preparation. This is mainly supported because their enzyme activity lowers progressively with time –a 30 minute old juice has half of the enzyme activity found in a freshly made one.

The fresh, alive enzymes are one of the key reasons why making a fresh juice at home with a juicer can be so beneficial for one’s health.

From DVDs to homes – the fascinating art of the swap!

February 28th, 2009 — 03:40 am

Everyone is swapping! From unwanted DVD games to DIY skills, whatever you want, you will find you can usually swap for it! The world is changing and we don’t need money to live in it. Hallelujah!

Once we’ve discovered the items we want to swap what happens next? According to the article “The art of swapping till you drop” is to find out where to swap our unwanted belongings which is decided after Googling the words ‘swap shop’. At the last count there were nearly four hundred thousand listings so there will be some browsing to do! There are many websites to choose from such as ‘snaffleup’ and ‘swapshop’, students prefer to swap at ‘studentswapshop and for skills – swapping check out ‘teamuphere’ and ‘skillswap’.

It seems everyone is in on it and that swapping is taking over the world. No more will people be able to say they purchased something at Gap or Next for those days are long gone! In response to an enquiry as to the origin of an item we can now say we swapped for it with Maureen of Windsor! Not only that, but we can add that the swap involved an old jigsaw puzzle for a pair of silver platform shoes and that we got the better deal.

What to Look for in a Food Mixer Bowl

January 23rd, 2009 — 02:01 am

There are quite a few components of a Kitchenaid stand mixer but the bowls should be considered the most important peice by far. The food mixer bowls that you use need to be strong and long lasting and made to fit on your specific mixer. The bowls should also not be damaged by the materials that the hooks and blades are made from. Here’s a look at what to consider before purchasing food mixer bowls.

It is most useful when starting out to consider the optional sizes of mixer bowls. The metal bowls which hold the food may be found in all sorts of different sizes. It is essential to only buy bowls that were designed to mount onto the Kitchenaid stand mixer. This is key because if the bowl is oversized, a smaller mixer will not be able to effectively mix the food. Smaller bowls can be difficult because they could possibly not be compatible with the mixer, and they might also become separated from the mixer base when the food is being mixed.

A related issue regarding these bowls is that they have to be compatible with your exact mixer. Each mixer bowl  is intended to work exclusively with individual types of mixers. For instance, many KitchenAid bowls work only for one or two mixers within the KitchenAid collection.

Another consideration is the sturdiness of the bowl. Your bowl will need to be able to handle regular use for many years. The ideal bowl for your mixer should remain usable as long as your mixer can. The bowl needs to be made using stainless steel or a material like it. Stainless steel works best because it is nearly impossible to chip or wear off, which means that the contents of the bowl will be able to move around during the mixing process.

it is important to have a sturdy handle on your bowls too. Quite a few bowls made for mixers will include a handle designed for situating the bowl accurately on the mixer plate and removing it afterward.

Food mixer bowls are one of the more crucial food mixer accessories you use. There are some important factors to consider if you are looking for them. These factors consist of: the capacity of the bowl, its sturdiness, whether it is manufactured for your mixer and if the bowl comes with handles. By being aware of these issues, you may purchase a food mixer bowl able to help you do your job. The Kitchenaid stand mixer is amongst the complete mixers in the market, complete with good quality bowls.

Keeping Your Food Air Tight With a Vacuum Sealer

January 23rd, 2009 — 02:01 am

Reynolds has been known for decades as one of the top brands of food storage materials. One of the handiest products available from the company is the Reynolds vacuum sealer, the Handi-Vac. The Handi-Vac helps foods to remain fresh and extends the amount of time you can safely store foods. The most attractive advantage of it is that the vacuum sealer is easy to use as well.

The Handi-Vac vacuum sealer is a product that improves the method by which people use vacuum sealers. Instead of being required to bring the food to a mounted sealer, the user can simply take the Handi-Vac vacuum sealer and apply it to a Handi-Vac freezer bag. The appliance is used to apply heat in order to get the bag to be tight and then expel the air from the bag.

A special air valve in the Handi-Vac vacuum sealer removes the air which would otherwise be trapped in the sealed area of the bag. As a result, freezer burn will be reduced and the food will stay fresh longer.

The procedure which the user follows for working with the vacuum sealer is simple. First, contents are placed in the bag. Next, the bag is placed horizontally on a counter and inspected to be certain that no product is beyond the ”fill to here” line on the Handi-Vac bag. After this, the sealer tip is put directly against the air valve and the “on” button is pressed. When the bag is sealed close around the food, the machine is turned off and the food is put immediately into the freezer.

One of the attractive things about the Handi-Vac vacuum sealer is that it costs far less than other vacuum sealers. The Handi-Vac costs about ten dollars on average. Additionally, the Handi-Vac works quicker than other sealers. It can take seconds to work its magic on a typical gallon sized bag.

Bags for the Handi-Vac sealer may also be easily purchased at places where the Handi-Vac sealer can be bought. The bags generally cost around $3.29 for a package of fourteen quart bags or nine gallon bags.

Another advantage to be aware of is that the bags can be resealed for future use. However, they must not be reused with different contents for the reason that the bag is unable to be cleaned. The bags contain no Teflon or PTFE materials, nor are any allergens in the bags. The bags are also approved as kosher.

The Reynolds Handi-Vac vacuum sealer is an excellent option to use in any kitchen. The Handi-Vac vacuum sealer is low-priced and is simple to use. This sealer can be bought at most department stores in addition to the replacement bags that can with it.

Henry Vacuum Cleaner Information.

January 18th, 2009 — 02:32 am

The idea of a vacuum cleaner as a housekeeping tool was brought to us by an Englishman named Henry Cecil Booth. In the 1950’s, this man invented the very first vacuum cleaner and dubbed it “Puffin Billy”. It began as a gas power-driven contraption, but nevertheless was the initial stages of the Henry vacuum cleaner.

The body of the vacuum cleaner was left outside while it was in use due to its large size, the smoke, the horrible odor and the noise.  This equipment ran using lengthy, lightweight hose put through the home's window in the room that was being cleaned.

There is a change from the vacuums of the past to those of the present day.

The initial model of the Henry vacuum cleaner was very big in size and made a lot of noise.Clearly, this was not a very well-liked product and didn't sell well. James Sprangler who was the man behind the vacuum or rather what it has become today, changed it to what it is by using some very easy elements, a fan, a pillow covering, and a box type structure.

Sprangler as well as the Henry vacuum cleaner project was unable to continue with his venture, he then sold his patent to Henry Hoover who invented the Hoover vacuum cleaner. The Henry Vacuum cleaner paled in comparison with the updated Hoover design of later years.

The Hoover brand of vacuum cleaner was a runaway success; even today the brand has its command and presence in the market, and Hoover is known as one of the few organizations that deliver on their promise. The Henry vacuum cleaner is now on hand for use!

After starting out with only very simple designs, the company now boasts more than six models of Henry vacuum cleaners, including cylinder vacuum cleaners, upright vacuum cleaners, centralized vacuum cleaners, wet vacuum cleaners and more!

To make a knowledgeable selection, you will have to weigh up the offers carefully to make certain that you are conscious of all the advantages and disadvantages and also to be sure there are no concealed issues. The best vacuum cleaner for your home is not the most expensive or the most beautiful, but the one which can take care of your needs in the house. Although chances are the Henry vacuum cleaner will suit your needs.

Ionic Air Purifier – Plasmacluster Ions – Japan’s Potent Weapon Against Deadly Bird Flu Virus H5N1

January 13th, 2009 — 08:35 am

In a dramatic press update on 27 August 2008, Sharp Corporation unveiled its latest technological weapon against bird flu! Incorporated in its ionic air purifier, the Plasmacluster Ion Technology (more on this in a later post) has just been scientifically proven to be 99.9% effective in destroying the bird flu virus known as H5N1.

With increasing regularity, the press reminds us that bird flu is the prime suspect to cause mankind’s next pandemic. Pandemic sounds terrifying. It is. That’s when a highly contagious virus goes global, in a very negative sense. It boggles my mind that the 1918 Spanish Flu may have killed 50 million people on earth! World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed on 5 October 2005 that the 1918 Spanish flu was caused by H1N1, a bird flu virus.

Now that I have your attention, is it time to PANIC?

Not now. The H5N1 virus was identified in China in 1996. Up to 10 Sep 2008, WHO data puts the death toll at 245, a “relatively small number” statistically. So what’s the fuss? Mutation of the bird flu virus to achieve human-to-human transmission capability is the ultimate horror of the scientific community. As of today, there has been only one probable case of human-to-human transmission recorded in Thailand in September 2004. But if the dreaded virus mutation takes place, you can expect pandemonium on a global scale.

As the threat grows day by day, countries around the globe are conscientiously preparing for the worse (more on this in a later post). At our individual level, we should start doing some homework too.

Ok, so what’s all this got to do with Sharp’s ionic air purifier. Isn’t it just another ionic air purifier? Yes, it’s ordinary in that it takes care of the usual stuff that we look for in an air purifier – dust, dirt, smoke, dander, pollen, cuisine and pet odours, pollutants, allergens etc. But if we can get protection from all these and more in one ionic air purifier, especially one that is a tested defense shield against a potentially deadly virus, why not? That’s what Sharp is saying, get the all-in-one air purifier with their Plasmacluster Ion Air Purifier.

If you’re value-conscious like me, the obvious question would be “yes, that makes a whole lot of sense but at what cost”? Sharp claims that it’s at no extra cost! Sharp contends that over a 5-year period, it is cheaper than any other competing ionic air purifier. A case of over-delivering by Sharp? How is it possible in this nothing-is-for-free world?

With the Plasmacluster Ionic Air Purifier Model FP-N40CX as the basis, Sharp contends that it is great value for money as there is no filter replacement costs for the first 5 years. At US$399, the Sharp model compares favourably against a typical competitor’s ionic air purifier that may cost US$160 upfront but over 5 years cost a total of US$560 due to annual filter replacement costs of US$100 each.

If you have relevant data, be it on Sharp or the competitors, I would greatly appreciate your input. Feel free to drop me a note if you have actual numbers.

In the meantime, I’m going to investigate intently the Sharp Plasmacluster Ion Technology. Especially since bird flu is still not quite at pandemic proportions.

Its never too soon to get ready. Experience is a good teacher. Imagine thousands of frantic people going from drugstore to drugstore looking for the same face mask. The N95 mask was touted as the only effective weapon as a near-pandemic scare gripped Asia. For the uninitiated, it was the year 2003. The SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) virus originated in Asia, infected 8,096 people around the world before finally resulting in 774 fatalities. As always, being prepared is half the battle won.

Watch this space as we track exciting developments in our pursuit of safe, pure and clean air with nothing more than an ionic air purifier.

Getting a Security Device – Some Info on Wired systems

January 13th, 2009 — 08:35 am

Did you know that statistics show us that your home is around 60% less likely to be broken into or vandalized if it is equipped with a home security device? There really is no doubt that the installation of a security system is vital these days.

Finding the correct home security device for your residence

In the world we live in today the range of different home security systems available is considerable so one must spend some time to properly evaluate each system. On this page we will give you some pointers to help you with your buying decision.

Your location is the first thing you need to take into consideration and depending on it you can decided what is the burglary rate; however, that may not be entirely accurate as at times thieves will travel great distances to make a move on a property.

The next point you may want to consider is the vulnerability of your home. For instants, are there old people in your home who can’t protect themselves? Have you got young children left alone in the home or is the home simply left unoccupied for long periods of time?

Once you have answered these questions you will have narrowed down your choices and hopefully you would have an idea by then of which security system you want to install.

The more classical wired security systems: Even nowadays the more classical devices with wires are quite popular mostly since people are used to them and very often they can be more economic, but The Home Security System Wiring often is quite difficult for many of us.

For most people, trying to deal with home security wiring it probably not a good idea and the services of a professional electrician will be in order, however needless to say if you are an electrician there’s nothing stopping you getting your hands dirty. It is imperative that home security system wiring be done in such a way that the wires are not visible by the naked eye, failing to do so could leave a window of opportunity open to a competent burglar.

Yet another important factor in home security system wiring is the proper insulations of the cables in order to protect them from humidity and adverse weather, which in turn will ensure a proper running security system all year round.

It really isn’t all that difficult to find yourself in a bit of a mess with a wired home security system installation. Therefore if you do not know how to go about it, leave it to the professionals and enjoy the extra security benefits your system provides once installed.
